Day 55 ..... 07.07.13 .... Newbury, Kintbury

Well the mechanic Paul was really impressive last night, for he arrived back at 6 p.m. to check the oil problem  having got the hotel boat on the move.  He has diagnosed a faulty alarm switch which he is going to replace when he gets one on Monday or Tuesday.
We therefore decided that today, Sunday, we would cycle back to a village we missed called Kintbury about 5 miles away.

A beautifully warm day and a beautifully rural run. Interestingly, all the way along the Kennet and Avon we have seen these pillboxes.  They were manned by the Home Guard as a second line of defence on the bridges in case of invasion on the South Coast. The things you learn!!!!!!

Kintbury was as charmingly rural as we thought it might be.

Having had the obligatory recovery drink these signs tickled us.  They are for customers to put on their tables when they order food in the garden which was extremly large!!! Nice little touch.

Maggie had persuaded me that a picnic would be a good idea and she was right.

This is just to give an idea of how rural this area is.  Only 5 miles from Newbury . Amazing.

Discovered many of these on the tow path .............

......and lo and behold a horse drawn barge appeared with the same horse, whose name we now know is Freddie, as we saw the other day.

Lovely that while the boat was in the lock Freddie was left to roam off ......

over the bridge and in to the field for a snack

untill the boat was ready !!

Cycled home and even got the television tuned just in time  to see Andy Murray win the last set at Wimbledon !!!
We shall see what tomorrow brings !!!
