Daqy 114 .... 03.09.13 .... Burton-on-Trent
Had booked in today at 10 to go around the Marstons Factory. Lucky to be the only two people at this time and were taken around by a lovely lady called Ruth. Very informative and chatty.
............. these two were cleaning out the beer troughs ready for the next brew of Pedigree being barrelled.
They still use an interesting system called The Union Methods to brew the beer in these extremely large barrels made of Russian Pine, which, if my memory serves me right contain 2,700 pints per barrel.
....................... fascinating to see it being produced on such a large scale. Makes the earlier Wadworth visit seem micro.
Burton once had 22 different breweries and produced 3 million barrels per year. The original IPA was brewed here and sent to the English soldiers in India in the 19th C.
......................... sadly there are only two breweries left. Marstons and Maltsen/Coors
Bass now only has a museum. The visit ended at this pleasant tasting area which was full of memorabilia.
An interesting morning ................. tomorrow off on our travels northwards, so we shall be moving every day for a while.
