Day 123 .... 13.09.13 .... Anderton Lift

Set off to Anderton through some lovely countryside.  All of this area has been mined for salt since Roman times and believe it or not some of the canal has subsided due toGeorgian/Victorian workings and so we came upon these great "flashes" as they are known where the land has subsided and filled with water from the canal.  ............................

.................. in contrast we suddenly came upon narrow rush-sided lengths, very similiar to the Kennet and Avon.

.................... suddenly a massive salt factory although we could not see the nodding donkeys that our book promised us.  Spectacular all the same.

Eventually after 6 hours arrived at our goal .... The Anderton Lift.

This is a Vertical lock taking boats to the River Weaver which goes onto the Mersey miles downstream. It was built by the Victorians needless to say and still works on the same principles they used.
This is the entry point into the Caissons. We went in since we wanted to have a go on the lift having come this far to see it !!!
