Day 121 .... 11.09.13 .... Hassel Green, Chesire

This morning we were out and about bright and early.  The first highlight came when we were checking the front lamp and a kingfisher flew up and down beside us catching a fish in the process.  It made a pass about four times and we were astounded because although we have seen flashes of them we had never had such a prolonged viewing  !!!

Then on to the Harecastle Tunnel which as I think I said yesterday is about 2790 yds long and takes 40 mins to get through in single file.  We were lucky to get on the first shift.  They let 8 boats through at a time with a gap of 50 metres or so.  It is very low in the middle, hence the chains at the portal to make sure one has the headroom.

Although I am standing here both Maggie and I had to duck at times in the middle.

This photo shows the fluorescent paint they put on the start of the lower stretches. Had to keep the roof boxes in the middle.

Horrific to think about them legging the boats through there, which they did before the advent of the engine. Surprisingly there was a breeze in there for they close the doors and switch on fans to get the fumes out. The tunnel-keeper had warned us and told me to keep hold of my toupee at the start !!!

On getting to the end of the tunnel after about 40 mins, the other surprise was the colour of the water.

This is caused by the iron ore from the old mine workings seeping in to the canal.  Apparently it has been deliberately decided to keep the colour since it reflects the history of the place.  I must say I think I agree with that.

The weather today has been raining virtually all day and so this pic does not do the countryside hereabouts justice.  We stopped today somewhat chilled and "locked out" only to find that both the pub and the shop in this village have closed down !!!!!  Perhaps the sighting of an early morning kingfisher is an omen !!!!!

  1. Hi Chris & Maggie ..... Still thoroughly enjoying your travelog. We are off to the south of France tomorrow but shall try to stay with you! Glad that neither of you suffer from claustrophobia !!! The tunnel sounds a lot more scary than the one that we went through! Very much love to you both, D & C.
